A "Brainbow" transgenic mouse
This image shows a portion of the hippocampus from a "Brainbow" transgenic mouse. US researchers manipulated neurons in mice to light up in a rainbow of fluorescent hues, creating a powerful tool for mapping out the brain's complicated wiring plan, they said on Oct 31. This "Brainbow", as they call it, will allow researchers to trace neurons throughout the nervous system and better understand its organisation and functions.
The Illuminated installation Vanished Berlin Wall by a Korean artist is in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. The installation, which is on display until Nov 9, marks the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Cinnamon is a four-year-old domestic pedigreed Abyssinian cat. The first full genetic map of the cat is already shedding light on a common cause of blindness in humans, and may offer insights into Aids and other diseases, Researchers said.
